Brightons

Falkirk

Scotland

One of the larger villages in the Braes area, and can be a very busy place at times.

With Polmont Young Offenders situated in the village, families from all over Scotland visit relatives on a daily basis.

I have taken a few photographs of the village, which I will update from time to time, just to show what has been happening to the area over the last decade or so.

The photographs shown can be saved and printed.

The Brightons Inn :- Situated at the corner of Waggon Road and the Maddiston Road. It hasn’t changed much over the years, and is still a typical village pub, selling a good pint. It has changed hands a couple of times in past years, but still gives good service to its customers.

Redding Co-operative: - The scene of many a winter accident, with vehicles failing to negotiate the bend and landing inside the shop. This is another establishment, which changes hands quite frequently. It was, until recently owned by an Asian family, but at the moment it has been closed down.

Jimmy Wood: - The newsagent shop is on its second owner, since Jimmy passed away. The present owner, Stuart McNeil, is a young chap, a family man, with an eye for business. His shop is always well stocked, clean, and he has pleasant staff serving at all times.

Carlos Rispolli: - Over the years this shop has seen numerous owners. At the moment Bud Ingles, who is the proprietor of the "Inn", runs it as a café and restaurant.

Carlos Rispolli:- The TV repair shop is now converted into dwelling house.

Brightons Picture House: - This was the entrance to the old Brightons Picturehouse and latterly the bingo hall. There are now three bungalows built in the space where the picture house stood.

Redding and Westquarter Cricket Club:- I think this is the saddest part of it all, when the ground was sold to build houses on. The houses are built between the Redding Road and Victoria Road, Brightons, with the estate being bordered by the canal and the burn.

The cricket club has a piece of land under construction for their new pitch in Sunnyside Road, Brightons.

Photograph shows the bottom of Newlands Road meeting the Redding Road.

Scottish Prison Service Training College: - This is situated at the corner of Newlands Road and Redding Road, within the grounds of Polmont Borstal, which of course now is a Young Offenders Institution, and is opposite the old cricket pitch.

Brightons Parish Church: - A place for worship and marriage vows. The minister at the moment is the Reverend Scott Kirkland.

Redding Road: - A summer view taken towards Falkirk from the "Cross"

Bob Fordham: - The fruit shop in the Waggon Road is shut once again. John Anderson, who took over from Bob, had to shut shop after his wife Sandra had a nasty fall. John still has his landrover and trailer for deliveries.

Masonic Lodge:- The Masonic Lodge which stands on the Maddiston Road, about one hundred yards from the Waggon Road.

The Royal British Legion: -" The Legion " is still as busy as ever, and still a place for social gatherings and bingo.

Wallacestone Primary School: - Wallacestone Primary School, Braemar Gardens. Some of you would have attended the school when it was in Waggon Road, but that was a few decades ago now.

The Bumpy Road:- Remember this road? It hasn't changed any since you went up and down it, from the " Cross " to the school. Still the same bumpy road.
