Reddingmuirhead

Falkirk

Another small village within the boundaries of Falkirk.

Reddingmuirhead starts at the bottom of Newlands Road, Brightons and continues along the B810 in a westerly direction towards the village of Sheildhill. It’s other boundaries being, the village of Wallacestone and the Union Canal.

The photographs I am about to show will indicate some of the changes, which have occurred in the last decade and I hope, will bring back pleasant memories.

The photographs can be saved and printed.

Newlands Road: - A view of the bottom part of Newlands Road from the telephone box going towards Redding Road, Brightons. At the bottom of the road now is another new roundabout.

Further up Newlands Road, and heading in a westerly direction towards Sheildhill, is the new Braes High School. This was completed in the year 2000 for the start up of the winter session in August. It is situated in one of the Borstal fields on the left-hand side of Newlands Road going towards Wallacestone Crossroads. Those of you who remember Annie Mair, will remember her small shop, the school is built just beyond the shop.

The Braes High School:-This view was taken from outside the South Lodge cottage, and opposite Annie Mair’s shop. The school was opened in August 2000. It was built to house the " Braes " children and it can hold just over 400 at any time. When Woodlands High school closed, the children from the Braes were moved to the Braes High.

Braes High School: - View taken from Wallacestone Cross. This shows the amount of space taken up by the school.

Wallace Brae Estate: - This estate has also cropped up. The entrance to the estate lies at the new roundabout built between Annie’s shop and the school. It stretches from there to the rear of the houses in Wallace Cres, Brightons, with the other borders, being Waggon Road, Maranatha Cres and Polwarth Ave. This is the only entrance/exit for the estate.

Braes High School: - This is the view the school kids get when they look out the windows. The Institution is also building a new wing opposite the school and the fence had to be moved closer to the road, with an additional wall built along side it.

Redding Road: - The old Redding road, leading to the canal and railway bridges. Another area where houses are about to be built, in the grounds of the Nobel’s factory come Redding pit area.

Canal Bridge: - View of the canal bridge at bottom of Redding Road. This bridge is still used by all types of vehicles, using and supplying the numerous workshops, which have cropped on the north side of the canal.

Railway Bridge:- This is how the bridge over the railway looks now. It was closed to traffic a number of years ago and made into a pedestrian footpath, but has been neglected over the years.

Canal from Bridge: - A view from the canal bridge, Redding road, looking towards the Institution. At the moment the canal is being dredged and the mercury, which came from the Nobel’s factory is being removed for health and safety reasons. It is hoped that in the near future the canal will be re-opened back to its formal status and again used for boating, between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The Union Canal opened for business as planned on the 26th May 2001. Whether it is a viable project or not, remains to be seen.

Craig Lee Restaurant{ The Answer }:- Still a nice restaurant to have a quiet drink and meal in, and very reasonable.

Rural Hall: - This is a building, which is the centre of the community. Last year the residents had a fight on their hands, which they won, with the building contracting firm, who are about to erect an estate in the Nobel’s area. What was proposed, was to dismantle the building and re-erect it at another site, to enable them to have an access road, but the residents took a stand, and won their case.

Wallacestone Methodist Church: - A church of god, which still has a good congregation attendance.

Red Brick House, The Old Co-op: - The old Co-op Building, which is now split into numerous small units. In the building there is a Garage repair shop, Fish Curer, Hair Dresser, Village shop, to name a few, and all appear to be well patronized.
